A birder’s delight, Raven
Ridge is filled with avian diversity. While probably at its peak
during spring and fall migrations, a number of high-elevation
migrants take up residence during the summer. You may espy a
variety of wood warblers, scarlet tanagers and veeries. An early
morning walk might flush a resting whippoorwill. During the summer
months, ruffed grouse and wild turkey are seen traveling in large
family groups, the adults trailed closely by a strand of fledgling
young, strung along behind like beads on a necklace. Migrations
of soaring hawks, kettles of turkey, and black vultures glide
playfully on thermals. You can watch their aerial acrobatics
from one of the high rock outcroppings that showcase 270º views
of the surrounding area. The serendipitous sighting of a magnificent
bald eagle is sure to inspire wonder and awe. Eagles roost in
trees along Raven Ridge in Fall.
Here are photos of some
of the beautiful birds that can be seen on Raven Ridge, followed
by a partial list of other birds you may see. The birds listed
in all capital letters are among the more rare ones that will
be worth the trip!
