High
atop Brumley Mountain, a part of the Clinch Mountain
range, is an ancient formation known by the local people
as "The Great Channels of Virginia." Commonly
referred to as the "Stonehenge
of Clinch Mountain ," the
channels are intertwining walkways between mostly rectangular
boulders of sandstone with upright walls up to 40 feet
high. A 2.1 mile hike from Raven Ridge, this most unusual
formation of Clinch Sandstone is at an altitude of 4200
feet, covers several acres, and has been described by
many geologists as the most important geological formation
in Southwest Virginia. Offered as a complimentary option
to the Raven
Ridge Eco-Tour, which is $25 and includes a sack
lunch. It is not open to the public and requires
an overnight stay. |
